Ls Land Issue 05 Meadow 12 Rapid

The first Tee Pee Restaurant was opened in the 30's on Fall Creek Parkway on a plot of land now owned by the state fairgrounds. Co-owner Albert Ray McComb wanted to create a dine-in, take-out and drive-in restaurant that would attract customers despite it being the Depression. The restaurant was known for the large tee pee on top of its roof and was open from 6:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m., "practically around the clock," as an article in a 1969 issue of IndyStar commented. Their specialties were burgers, seafood, steak, a special salad dressing and fresh pie. The drive-in trend caught on after World War II, especially with teenagers who would come to the Tee Pee Restaurant after school or on weekends to hang out. McComb opened a southside and short-lived Nora neighborhood location on the city's north side. But as the 70's hit, drive-ins began falling out of style and all Tee Pee locations closed by the early 80s.
